Welcome
to my Rum Punch page ... |

|
 |
So, I
think I should begin with when and where I
orginally ran into a
planter's punch. ... In 2003, on our honeymoon, my wife and I went to
Long Bay Hotel, on the island of Antigua. There was a young lady there
named
Sandra that made me a drink practically every night before
dinner and it
was
a Planter Punch. I watched her make it a few times and she put in a
shot of Cavalier Rum, a shot of orange juice, some pineapple juice, a
few
shakes of bitters and a shot of grenadin.
Holy dad-gum moly, this was
good! When we got back to the states I tried to reproduce it and found
it somewhat difficult. Bacardi Rum is not Cavalier Rum. It's actually
nothing like Cavalier Rum. But! what is close, is Mount Gay Rum. This
is good stuff I tell you what.

Well, with that said ... I went for the next few years making my
Planters Punch as follows ... In a tall 12 oz glass full of ice, I put
1 shot of Mount Gay Rum, a couple of shakes of bitters, a shot of
Grenedine, and fill the glass with Dole Pineapple/Orange juice. Yum
dad-gum yum I tell you what, thats good. It will certainly make a happy
guy out of you on a hot summer day.

After
drinking these
for few years, I found myself slowly putting less and less grenedine in
the drink. Seems grenedine started sitting kinda heavy on my stomach. I
finally started using maraschino cherry syrup instead of grenedine. I
thought it taste better and definetely sit better on the stomach. I now
use about 1/3 to 1/4 a shot of the syrup for a 12 oz drink.

While in Eleuthera .....
.... back in
May, 2010, I tried something a little different. I bought a can of Kern's
Pineapple Coconut nectar.
This stuff was very white and milky. So I put a shot of rum
(used Bacardi Gold) in
a glass of
ice and filled it halfway up with the Pineapple Coconut nectar, then
the rest of the way with water. Not bad, not bad at all.

After returning home,
I tried to find some Kern's
Pineapple Coconut but couldn't. I did, however, find Jumex Coconut
Pineapple. Not near as thick, but does taste good. So now I'm going
with ... ice, shot of rum (used Cruzan 5 yr, can't find it anymore
though), halfway up with Jumex Coconut Pineapple nectar and then fill
with Dole Pineapple Orange. No Bitters and no maraschino syrup. The
results are very tasty, give it a try on a hot day. I also tried
Jumex's Papaya Pineapple nectar. It was different, but still very good.

I've come to the conclusion that a Planters Punch is
basically rum with any fruit juice. I will start posting recipes I find
for Planters Punch and even giving a few of them a try if they sound
tasty. You can try them yourself.
Cheers
Yaw!
